Gunsmith by trade. He established his shop in the heart of a forest at a distance of fifteen miles from the nearest white settlement. William Chesebrough was born 1594 in Boston, England and came 1630 to America. He represented Stonington in a colonial conference.

He was suspected to sell firearms or ammunition to the Indians and was required to appear before Captain Mason at Saybrook. He insisted that he was not engaged in any unlawful traffic with the redskins. He did not intend to remain alone in the wilderness and agreed to give a bond of £100 not to furnish the Indians with munitions of war.
